Bucket Lists

One comment I’ve heard repeatedly from people is that this kind of experience is a bucket list thing, and I’ve been thinking a bunch about that lately.

While I appreciate the idea of a bucket list being motivational, what I don’t like is the way it reduces experiences to bullet points on a list. The richness and value of the thing, for me, is in the whole process that gets you there, not just the end point of being at the start (and finish!) line. For me, the Dakar is not really an end point or a bucket list item, it’s a culmination of points along the way, each of which was what makes it worth getting out of bed in the morning. It’s people like you all, places, experiences, emotions, both good and bad, comfortable and uncomfortable, fun and not so fun, that make it fulfilling.

So, the training that I’m doing, while invaluable for the Dakar, is also something that I would want to do whether I was going to Dakar or not.

Now, on to less weighty matters…

I’ve been trying to get in some real epic rides, for lots of reasons. First, they are the best kind of training, exactly the right muscles, exactly the right mental training, and of course a lot of fun. Second, they are what I love doing. I can claim I am doing them for Dakar, but the reality may be the reverse- I’m doing Dakar to do more of them. Third, there are some good lessons to be learned, with nutrition, gear, bike setup, whatever. Finally, do I really need an excuse? :-) Here’s some pics from the last few days…

Let’s find out where this goes…

Pretty sure this is a trail…
